            Mind the Gap: Tackling the issue of workforce skills

<p>After successfully securing an investment of almost &pound;5 million to develop the skills of employers in justice, community safety and legal services across the UK, Skills for Justice will set out its vision in this FREE one day conference for the future of employee skills in the sector.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The conference will showcase the four work streams contained in our new delivery programme as well as providing an opportunity to share the major findings from our <strong>Employer Skills Survey</strong> published in February 2012.</p>
<p>The survey results have been used extensively across our business to provide the evidence and rationale for tackling the key issues raised by employers and stakeholders. Through key speakers and themed workshops we will assess these issues and solutions in the light of current political and economic skills drivers.</p>
<p>Over the next 2 years, we will co-invest with employers and stakeholders in an innovative programme of work to address current and future skills needs which will help create a world class workforce able to rise to the challenges that lie ahead. Our proposed activities include supporting employers to <strong>increase apprenticeships</strong>, develop resources to <strong>reduce business crime</strong>, enable workplaces to <strong>develop and thrive</strong> and to help organisations <strong>work in partnership</strong>.</p>

<h3><br /><a name="Workshop"></a>Workshops Briefing</h3>
<p>You will need to select two workshops to attend at the event; one in the morning and one in the afternoon.&nbsp; If you have not already done so or have expressed interest in more than two can you please read this briefing to help with your selection and confirm <strong>TWO</strong> workshops only, to attend?&nbsp;&nbsp; This paper provides some detail about each topic. Skills for Justice has secured funding to carry out activities under each of the following titles.&nbsp; This work was informed by employers in the sector through the Employer Skills Survey and various consultations demonstrating employer support.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The workshops are designed to explore what this work will mean for you and your organisations.&nbsp; We are keen to ensure that the proposed solutions are sustainable and have maximum impact.&nbsp; You will have one hour to discuss your chosen topic with fellow delegates.&nbsp;&nbsp; On the day a more detailed briefing will be provided with a series of questions intended to drive the discussions, however,&nbsp; the discussions will not be limited to these questions only; each group will be supported by a facilitator from Skills for Justice.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>High Performing Workplaces</strong><br /><span class="fontcolorb">Challenge:</span>&nbsp;Funding and staff reductions<br /><span class="fontcolorb">Barriers:</span>&nbsp;&nbsp;A lack of skills to lead and manage large scale change and a lack of technical skills to address new challenges<br /><span class="fontcolorb">Solutions:</span>&nbsp;Support the use of business improvement tools such as such as Investors in People (IiP), International Standards Organisation (ISO), National Occupational Standards (NOS) and Lean Six Sigma (LEAN)</p>
<p><strong>High Performing People</strong><br /><span class="fontcolorb">Challenge:</span>&nbsp;To meet the changing demands and pressures of the 21st century<br /><span class="fontcolorb">Barriers:</span>&nbsp;No national definition of competence, a lack of evidence about the value apprenticeships add and a lack of tools to enable managers to effectively identify and utilise the skills within their workforce<br /><span class="fontcolorb">Solutions:</span>&nbsp;Develop competency frameworks and professional registers, develop an evidence base for Apprenticeships and develop SMART tools for utilising skills.</p>
<p><strong>Working Across Boundaries</strong><br /><span class="fontcolorb">Challenge:</span>&nbsp;Financial cuts &amp; the need to improve frontline services with fewer staff, against a backdrop of economic recession &amp; civil disturbances<br /><span class="fontcolorb">Barriers:&nbsp;</span>Segregation of learning across professions and a lack of training that focuses on collaborative skills<br /><span class="fontcolorb">Solutions:</span>&nbsp;Collaborative learning across organisations and barriers, roll out of our cross sector leadership and management programme, the development of a shared learning resource that outlines key organisations and roles within the Criminal Justice System and an evaluation of critical barriers in terms of resilience.</p>
<p><strong>New Employers, New Models</strong><br /><span class="fontcolorb">Challenge:&nbsp;</span>Working more closely with organisations that are not in the justice sector but complement the work of the justice sector.&nbsp; These include Local Government, the Armed Forces &amp; in local services which support business growth <br /><span class="fontcolorb">Barriers:&nbsp;</span>The transition will need support to embed collaboration &amp; develop learning programmes, learning materials, careers information, &amp; risk assessment tools <br /><span class="fontcolorb">Solutions:&nbsp;</span>The transformation of local authorities through shared best practice, experience and materials, the&nbsp; development of a new pre-entry course for the Armed Forces and working with sector employers and SMEs to reduce the impact of business crime.</p>
